Answer:_______________

1)

 Find the first five terms of the sequence given by

a1 = 2, a2 = 9+a1 and an = 2an-1 + 8 for n > 2

Answer: 2,11,30,68,144

SOLUTION 1 :

 Given a1 = 2, a2 = 9 + a1 and  an = 2an-1+8

a1 = 2 . a2 = 9 + 2 = 11

For n = 3,

a3 = 2a3-1 + 8

= 2a2 + 8

= 2(11) + 8 = 30

For 4

= a4 = 2a4-1 + 8

= 2a3 + 8

= 2(30) + 8 = 68

 For 5

 = a5 = 2a5-1 + 8

= 2a4 + 8

= 2(68) + 8 = 144

Hence the first five terms of the sequence are 2,11,30,68,144.

2)

 Find the first five terms of the sequence given by

a1 = 2, a2 = 2+a1 and an = 2an-1 + 6 for n > 2

Answer: 2,4,14,34,74

SOLUTION 1 :

 Given a1 = 2, a2 = 2 + a1 and  an = 2an-1+6

a1 = 2 . a2 = 2 + 2 = 4

For n = 3,

a3 = 2a3-1 + 6

= 2a2 + 6

= 2(4) + 6 = 14

For 4

= a4 = 2a4-1 + 6

= 2a3 + 6

= 2(14) + 6 = 34

 For 5

 = a5 = 2a5-1 + 6

= 2a4 + 6

= 2(34) + 6 = 74

Hence the first five terms of the sequence are 2,4,14,34,74.

3)

 Find the first five terms of the sequence given by

a1 = 2, a2 = 10+a1 and an = 2an-1 + 4 for n > 2

Answer: 2,12,28,60,124

SOLUTION 1 :

 Given a1 = 2, a2 = 10 + a1 and  an = 2an-1+4

a1 = 2 . a2 = 10 + 2 = 12

For n = 3,

a3 = 2a3-1 + 4

= 2a2 + 4

= 2(12) + 4 = 28

For 4

= a4 = 2a4-1 + 4

= 2a3 + 4

= 2(28) + 4 = 60

 For 5

 = a5 = 2a5-1 + 4

= 2a4 + 4

SOLUTION 1 :

 Given a1 = 2, a2 = 15 + a1 and  an = 2an-1+8

a1 = 2 . a2 = 15 + 2 = 17

For n = 3,

a3 = 2a3-1 + 8

= 2a2 + 8

= 2(17) + 8 = 42

For 4

= a4 = 2a4-1 + 8

= 2a3 + 8

= 2(42) + 8 = 92

 For 5

 = a5 = 2a5-1 + 8

= 2a4 + 8

SOLUTION 1 :

 Given a1 = 2, a2 = 4 + a1 and  an = 2an-1+7

a1 = 2 . a2 = 4 + 2 = 6

For n = 3,

a3 = 2a3-1 + 7

= 2a2 + 7

= 2(6) + 7 = 19

For 4

= a4 = 2a4-1 + 7

= 2a3 + 7

= 2(19) + 7 = 45

 For 5

 = a5 = 2a5-1 + 7

= 2a4 + 7

= 2(45) + 7 = 97

Hence the first five terms of the sequence are 2,6,19,45,97.

Answer: 2,13,30,64,132

SOLUTION 1 :

 Given a1 = 2, a2 = 11 + a1 and  an = 2an-1+4

a1 = 2 . a2 = 11 + 2 = 13

For n = 3,

a3 = 2a3-1 + 4

= 2a2 + 4

= 2(13) + 4 = 30

For 4

= a4 = 2a4-1 + 4

= 2a3 + 4

= 2(30) + 4 = 64

 For 5

 = a5 = 2a5-1 + 4
